Today was Tammy’s birthday! Yesterday in class, we talked about birthdays. Our teacher said that in Argentina, they get three wishes when they blow out their candles. She said that some common wishes are for health, money, and love. Also, in order to receive your wishes, it is not imperative that you blow out all of the candles. I thought that was kind of interesting.
I got up at 8:45 for breakfast at 9. I had a media luna, some tostadas with dulce de leche, two cups of hot chocolate, and some grapes. The laundromat man brought back my clothes and they turned out okay! They smell like perfume, but they are still the same colors! I haven’t worn any of them yet, but they don’t look like they changed shape enormously! Fani had an appointment with the oculist and so she left while I was still eating. It was my first time alone in the apartment. I washed my dishes and wiped off the table, placemats, and counters. I got ready for class and listened to music on my computer. I also took some pictures of the apartment so I will have to post those soon. Fani came back and I left soon after. I went to a store near my apartment and bought a phone card. I then went to the ISA office and got some help with some homework I didn’t understand. It is hard for Fani to help me because she cannot see very well. After my homework was finished, I called my mom from the ISA office. I got to talk to her for a half hour. I headed to the university after that. I got there really early, so I went up to the 19th floor (yes, the UB has 19 floors, the ground floor, and two sub-floors for a total of 22 floors) and took pictures out of the windows. There is a balcony up there, but I think it is only for emergencies. There are also stairs that lead to it, but again I think that is an emergency exit. I wish I could go out there! We had our other profesora, Eugenia, today. I think I like her better. We continued with our grammar stuff. During the lunch break, I used the computer. The boy who sits next to me, Will, had a migraine. I felt sorry for him because he was in so much pain. We talked about the difference between driving in the United States and Argentina and then did an activity where we had to give advice to the Argentine drivers. We also read a short paper about how to be a true Argentine driver filled with funny tips such as “Those white lines on the road are put there for decoration. Who told the people that they could walk on them?” and other funny things. We had a fifteen minute break “for coffee” and I used the computer again. I wish I could go outside during the breaks, but there really is not enough time and nowhere to go. We divided up into 2 groups of girls and one group of guys and used our new grammar to say things that annoy us about the opposite sex. The group of the opposite sex then had to defend those things, even if they didn’t agree. It was pretty funny and was a nice break from grammar rules. We then were assigned four homework exercises and got out of class. I decided to walk around a little before heading back. I have a new favorite hobby that may surprise some of you: shopping. However, I don’t get into shopping for new boots or clothes. Nope, I head to the grocery store. Well, actually, I went to three grocery stores and a bakery on my way home! I wanted to buy a cheap thermos to take to the park to make mate. I found one for $4.20 (pesos) which is less than $1.50 US! It is a special mate thermos and I think it is unbreakable. It is made of plastic and Styrofoam. I will have to let you know how it works. I also bought some alfajores which are the cookies with dulce de leche in the middle and these ones have white chocolate (kind of) on the outside. I also wanted to find something to sit on when I go to the park. I was thinking about buying a placemat, but when I was wandering through a grocery store, I found this towel that I think is supposed to be a rag for only 50 cents US! It is the perfect size. I decided to go to the park early tomorrow and drink mate. It would be more fun if someone else was coming with me, but I think it will still be fun. I stopped at a grocery store on my road and amidst my roaming, I found fresh-baked bread for sale. I was thinking about buying a loaf of bread because I have peanut butter (never travel without it) and so I could make sandwiches for lunch. However, I decided to buy some long bread things that look like breadsticks. They were really cheap. I bought 3 for one peso so they were about ten cents each! I am really excited about my mate picnic tomorrow! When I go to grocery stores, I always look at the dulce de leche and the mate. Did you know that mate comes in many different flavors? Today I saw regular, honey, orange, lemon, grapefruit, apple, and peach. I want to try them all! When I got home, Fani greeted me and then she got dinner on the table while I started my homework. For dinner I had soup, salad that consisted of shredded lettuce and shredded carrots, a big chicken patty with a fried egg on top, and some canned fruit. The canned fruit had a really nasty flavor and I couldn’t eat it. I felt bad, but I just couldn’t eat it. After dinner I finished my homework and worked on the computer. I got to chat online with Stephanie Wicker which was fun. I am going to head to bed pretty soon because I want to get to the park tomorrow morning early enough to have a long time there to drink mate and eat my breadsticks with peanut butter and the apple and banana Fani always gives me while sitting on my rag and watching dogs! I think it will be fun!
